Curatorial Projects

Wedgespace - a Project at Southeast College, Eastside Campus

Wedgespace exhibited 40 shows in six years, between Sept 2013 and December 2019. Jesse Outlaw was the first and Orna Feinstein the last in this auspicious period of creativity at Southeast College, Eastside Campus, HCC.
Below is an archive of projects curated with Houston artists in an unusually shaped room which had five walls, two doors, 7 windows, and carpet squares. An architectural oddity, Wedgespace was never lockedexcept when the campus building closed at night. It was a waiting room that had not found a purpose for a good five years. Wedgespace became a project space for visiting artists, students, faculty, and staff who could watch artworks revealed during the installation process. A different kind of public presentation, artists had to think through how to make work not too big and not too precious.

Wedgespace grew out of the Southeast Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, in operation for 5 years prior to Wedgespace's fruition because of seed money provided Dr. Irene Porcarello, President of SE College. With her financial support our SE Arts and Languages Department was able to curate projects for open areas of unconventional exhibition projects at the college. Via a faculty juried committee for project proposals, AIR introduced other academic departments to the the language of art.

Early supporters for Wedgespace were Kevin Clement, Department Chair at the time, Pauline Warren, Dean of Academics, and SE College President, Irene Porcarello, The Facilities Manager was less interested, probably for security reasons. A huge thank you to artist Sarah Welch who in the end phase of AIR and the initial phases of Wedgespace, was our department assistant. With her great graphic skills, Sarah served professionally in the transition period between AIR and Wedgespace during the reorganization period of the five college system, to one, at HCC. Full-time faculty members at SE, Justin Varner and Lisa Wildermuth, participated in early experiments with their students, as did multiple adjunct enthusiasts booster for the meaningful projects that benefited teaching and learning.
