Roadsign USA, the Project, by June Woest
RoadsignUSA is a small scale billboard I started curated in Houston, TX, from 2009 - 2014. Larry Kelly Real Estate generously donated the 12' x 5' sign after Hurricane Ike passed through town and many commercial billboards were left to swing in the wind, as was this one. A little pole stabilization by his sign guy and it was ready for me to use, after some providing a some modicum of proof that I knew what I was doing, followed by engaging street side businesses. It was an alternative space for artists, and it was centrally located not that far from Houston's museum district and medical center on a busy thoroughfare. Artists worked site-sensitively with the the businesses and what they saw and found on the street near the road sign. Most artists used the sign as a jumping off point to explore their own ideas then follow up with an event or reception in the parking lot or at the ice house. The sign became a means to an end for artists to continue exploring their ideas. Eventually monies ran out, even though costs were not prohibitive, thanks to friends and family. In this section of my website you can read more about each artist who participated and get the backstory on each sign.
